The RLC-423 Reolink has a 5 megapixel, with an f=2.7-12 mm, ⅓ inch varifocal lens, meaning you get high definition capture. You can also control the motorized lens with your phone or NVR. My major issue was autofocus after zooming. It takes a few seconds for an image to become clear after you zoom in and out. But the issue isn’t bad enough to be a dealbreaker. The Reolink RLC-423 auto tracking is admirable. This motion-sensing camera with a 31-87 degree viewing angle can detect and record moving objects, including humans, vehicles, and animals.

Thanks to the 4X optical zoom, you can record subjects up to 196 feet away. Its noise cancellation reduces the quality loss when zooming in and keeps pictures sharp in poor lighting. And speaking of lighting, the camera has six infrared LED lights, which help its lens pick out heat-emitting objects in the dark.

The RLC-423 pans and tilts at 360 and 90-degree ranges, respectively, which means that the camera will give you total coverage of any location you mount it. The camera also has a high resolution of 2560 x 1920 at 25 FPS, meaning you can see every detail in a video, and the IP66 rating means you can rest assured of protection from damage due to light showers. Furthermore, it records in H.264 format and processes images at 1024-8192 kbps.

Connection

The RLC 423 doesn’t support WiFi, so you have to connect it to your LAN with wires. Its interface sports an RJ-25 Ethernet cord, a 12V DC power port, RCA audio-in for plugging microphones and capturing audio, and a power reset button. You can also deliver videos and power this camera using PoE.

I believe the camera has too many wires. But, the only reason I don’t see it as an issue is due to their arrangement. They form a pigtail at the back of the camera, and you can hide them in a junction box.

You can remotely access the camera for live-streaming via the mobile app or computer software. The software sends 30-second motion clips to your email and notifications to your phone.

Installation

The Reolink RLC-423 4-megapixel POE PTZ security IP camera has everything you need for a smooth installation. You will find screws, plugs, network, and Ethernet cables with a waterproof sleeve, a mounting hole template, and a power adaptor in the box. You need at least 22W to power the camera and 802.3at for the PoE.

Install the Reolink client software from the website to find your camera’s IP address.
Click on Add Device and scan LAN.
Double-click the RLC-423 camera that it finds.
Change the default password, which is “blank.”
It will automatically redirect you to the camera’s live stream.

Conclusion

Should you buy this camera for private use? Yes. The Reolink RLC 423 offers full-range panning and tilting. The zoom is okay for daily use, but the autofocus could be faster. It has a fast processing speed and auto-tracking, with a noise cancellation that smoothens images.
